Best Smartphones Under Rs. 15,000 : January 2015

motorola_moto_g_gen_2.jpg
In our last roundup of the best Android phones that cost less than Rs. 15,000, we had recommended the Xiaomi Mi 3 as the best phone to buy, and had been suggesting the 8GB variant of the Asus Zenfone 5 as the best value for money phone you can get. Three months have passed since then however, and a lot of new phones are in the market under Rs. 15,000. Also notable is the fact that since our last roundup, the Xiaomi Mi 3 is no longer available to buy. However, if you can get your hands on it at less than Rs. 15,000, it remains a great buy.
Some of the high profile launches since our last roundup included the three Android One phones and the fingerprint sensor equipped Xolo Q2100, not to mention the Jolla Smartphone running the Sailfish OS and the entry-level Firefox OS phone, the Intex Cloud FX. If you're looking to buy a phone right now, then here are our top picks for smartphones under Rs. 15,000:
Best overall: Motorola Moto G (Gen 2)
The Moto G was one of the handsets responsible for creating the current interest in the under-Rs. 15,000 market, and the second generation of the device remains an excellent buy. The new Moto G (Review | Pictures) is a bit boring to look at, but does well in terms of its display, software, performance, battery life and camera, making it a really good pick.

Best value for money: Asus ZenFone 5 (8GB)
Available at under Rs. 10,000, the Asus ZenFone 5 (Review | Pictures) 8GB model remains our value-for-money pick, since you get a phone with a great camera, decent performance and looks, at a price where the competing phones come with serious compromises.

Best camera: Panasonic P81
The Panasonic P81 (Review | Pictures) launched at a fairly high price of Rs. 19,990, and at that price it wasn't a great option at all. However, the phone has just received a huge price cut and although that doesn't help with the boring design and average display, it certainly makes the P81 a reasonable buy today. We liked the camera on this phone even at its original price, and at approximately Rs. 11,000, it is probably the best option around with great low-light performance. In case you don't want to go with a phablet that has a 5.5-inch screen, you could instead pick up the Moto G. That phone has a pretty good camera too, but the P81 wins in terms of low-light performance.

Best battery life: Micromax Canvas Nitro
Launched in September for Rs. 12,900, the Micromax Canvas Nitro (Review | Pictures) did not thrill us - its scores in design and software were middling, and the camera is downright bad. The phone comes loaded with bloatware, and the performance is only middling. But the battery life on the phone is unmatched in the category, and if you're someone who's always on the move and needs a big battery that won't let you down, then there's no better option than the Canvas Nitro.

  • Unwanted bloatware
Best phablet: Panasonic P81
While there are other phablets in this category, the price cut of the Panasonic P81 makes it a worthy option. You won't get the best looking phone for your money, and the Android skin from Panasonic is crude, but the phone has good performance, a great camera, and delivers incredible value for the money it costs.

Samsung Galaxy S6

Samsung Galaxy S6 Allegedly Pictured; Compared With Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5

samsung_gs6_leak_toranji.jpg

Samsung's Galaxy  S6 smartphone, expected to launch early next year, has been leaked on multiple occasions so far, and this time around - the anticipated flagship has been spotted in images and compared with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy S5.
The new leaked images show the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S6 sporting a metal build and a working display featuring an Android 5.0 Lollipop-styled lock screen. The front of the Galaxy S6 is seen with sleek bezels on the sides and even the frames appear to be made of metal. There is a Samsung logo branding above the display in the front panel while rear also houses one just below the primary camera. The rear panel may also feature a metallic finish, though the leaked images are of low-resolution and appear to have slightly distorted colours.
Another image shows the Galaxy S6 in a side-by-side comparison with its predecessors - the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5. The alleged wider Galaxy S6 seems to feature a bigger display, and is slightly taller than both the Galaxy S5 (which sports a 5.1-inch display) and Galaxy S4 (features 5-inch display).
On Monday, a report claimed that the Galaxy S6 was shipped to India this month for testing purposes and the smartphone featured a 5.5-inch display.
The purported images of the alleged Galaxy S6 have been posted by an Iranian blogToranji (first picked by Phone Arena).
To refresh, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is rumoured to feature a 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor alongside Mali-T760 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Earlier this month, a possible variant of Samsung's Galaxy S6 was spotted on the AnTuTu benchmark sitetipping some specifications.
Prior to this, a report citing an analyst claimed that Samsung's Galaxy S6 flagship will debut early next year at CES - and not MWC as expected previously.
We have already heard that the Samsung Galaxy S5 successor is codenamed Project Zero, and is reportedly being built from scratch.

HTC Teases Launch of New Desire Series Smartphones at CES 2015

htc_invite_ces_2015_weibo_official.jpg
HTC has started sending invites for a CES press event on January 5 in Las Vegas, where it is now expected to unveil new Desire series smartphones, and not the rumored HTC One (M9) a.k.a HTC Hima.
The company posted the CES 2015 invitation poster image on its official Weibo account (via upleaks) that reads, "2015.1.6 CES Always Desire more", hinting towards Desire series devices to be announced at this event. The invite notably mentions two dates, though they are thought to be pointing to the same event occurring in different time zones (in Las Vegas and Taiwan).
Notably, a recent report had tipped HTC to launch the One (M9) or HTC Hima smartphone at CES 2015, though the latest official social media post seems to contradict this. The same source had also pointed to the purported specifications of the smartphone on AnTuTu benchmarks.
Last week though, HTC was tipped to launch the Hima aka One (M9) in March, alongside the anticipated Sense 7 UI on Android 5.0 Lollipop. This time period fits with HTC's regular flagship refresh cycle, with the Taiwanese firm launching its flagship smartphones in the month of March for the past two years.
While at this point of time it's not known that what devices the Taiwanese giant will introduce at CES, it was only last week when @upleaks had tipped the specifications of a mid-range smartphone, dubbed the HTC A12, which will feature a 64-bit processor.
The alleged HTC A12 is said to include a 4.7-inch (720x1280 pixels) display; a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.2GHz; 1GB of RAM; 8-megapixel rear camera; a 1.3-megapixel front camera; dimensions of 139.8x69.5x9.5mm; a 2100mAh battery, and Android 4.4 with HTC Sense UI.
Last week, HTC's North Asia President, Jack Tong, had said the firm would be expanding its 4G entry-level smartphone portfolio in the first quarter. The DigiTimes report citing Jack Tong had noted that HTC will stress on promotion of affordable HTC handsets over the Internet, similar to Xiaomi.
The report had added that Tong also expects that HTC handset shipments will grow by a double-digit rate next year.

7 Free SMS Apps For Android

Not too long ago, most of us who use messaging services to stay connected with family, friends and other contacts would buy an sms pack which allowed us to end lots of messages for a very nominal price.
As more and more people are moving on to messaging apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, Hike, etc, we do not use the sms services as frequently as we used to earlier. Let us not forget that there are still   lots of people around us who are either happy with their featured phones or can’t afford to buy the expensive devices available in the market.
Now to connect with any such contacts, you must be able to send sms messages without worrying about the extra bill.
If you need to sms regularly, you need not worry about getting an sms pack anymore. Android, once again, is here to help. You can easily send and receive text messages anywhere within India without any extra cost and without enabling Mobile data on your phone, if you have an android based phone.
While your phone is connected to wif-fi, install any of these 5 free text messaging apps for android and send any number of messages without worrying about the costs incurred on the same.
Free SMS main-001
Here is how you can save money and send free SMS with these Android apps that you can download on your phone.

Way2SMS

Way2SMS is one of the oldest services of its kind in India, and also one of the best which is why it is mentioned at the top of my list.
Way2SMS is now available in the form of an android app, and can be easily installed from the Google play store
Just create your account and add contacts (phone number and name). Once you’re done with these two initial steps, you will be able to send free SMS/text to any mobile number in India for free.
After installing the way2SMS app, you simply need to create a new account or login with existing one, if you are an old user. Its simple user interface is another attraction which makes it better than any other messaging app in the list.

JustSMS

Another app which has a simple user interface and allows users to send unlimited text/SMS to any mobile phone number in India for free is JustSMS. Users just need to register for a new account and then start adding contacts easily.
An additional feature of this app is that it comes with lots of SMS templates which you can use when you are in a hurry or, maybe, just too lazy to type.

Textra SMS

Developed by a genuine and known developer (Delicious Inc), you can find Textra SMS app under Communication category of Google play store.
TextraSMS has one of the most elegant user interfaces which is also simple to use but when I used it to send out test messages, I did not like this app too much because messages failed to get delivered on time. While the previous two apps delivered my sms instantly, there was a considerable time lag when I used this service.  I am not sure if others face the same problem while using this app.

SMS Text Messaging Texting SMS

Now, that does not look like a very professional name for an app but if you use this service, you will love it for its functionality and the ability to send out an unlimited number of text messages anywhere across the country.
The unique feature of this app is that it can be used on Android tablet and even on PC. You just need to login with your single account everywhere and your account become accessible from any end. Thus you can send text SMS easily either from Android phone or tablet or even from PC.

GO SMS Pro

Go SMS Pro is featured at the bottom of this list of 5 free sms apps for android because its existing users are not too satisfied with this service. There have been problems with its functionality of sending out text SMS which weren’t delivered on time, requiring users need to resend. I still listed it here as it was working in my case and I was able to send any number of messages from my Nexus 7. Its clutter free user interface was another benefit.

Free SMS to India

Free SMS
Free SMS to India is an Android app that allows users to send free and unlimited text messages to any mobile in India directly from an Android phone. This app gives you the advantage to use multiple gateways like Way2SMS, FullonSMS, Site2SMS, 160by2 and YouMint. The developer is also open to being contacted to add more gateways.
The interface is simple and Free SMS also allows you to choose from the huge library of sample texts for different occasions that you may be sending messages for. What seems like icing on the cake is the developer’s claim that this app saves battery life and RAM as it transfers the processing and operations to external servers.

JaxtrSMS

Jaxtr SMS
Launched in November 2011, JaxtrSMS allows users to send unlimited and free text messages to any phone anywhere in the world. The SMS recipients are not required to install the app before using it. This makes it the world’s first mobile based SMS app which is completely open, claims Sabeer Bhatia who is the CEO and Co-Founder of Jaxtr, TOI reported. Amongst a host of free SMS services, this ‘open’ feature of JaxtrSMS gives it an edge over other SMS apps. According to Bhatia, this ad supported multi-platform app will make traditional texting redundant.
Hope you like our list of 5 free sms apps for android users in India. If you are using any other apps than those mentioned here, do share their names and your experiences with those apps with our readers by writing to us.
